Final preparations are underway for the staging of a special Charity event that aims to re-create the golden age of cinemas in Chester.
Complete with usherettes, ice-cream trays and a full-length classic feature film whilst taking a nostalgic look back at the long-gone picture palaces that Cestrians used to flock to.
Following the success of the first “Night at The Flicks” held last year, the event at Upton Village Hall on Sunday 17th February from 7.30pm will include a display of memorabilia from some of the much-loved Cinemas in Chester.
Including The Regal, Odeon, Gaumount, The Classic, the Tatler, and The Musical Hall from The Roger Shone Collection.
Plus a special video presentation and a screening of a “main feature”, Mel Brooks’ classic comedy “Young Frankenstein” starring Gene Wilder.
Organised by a group of local Cinema enthusiasts, tickets for the event are £5 which include free ice creams and refreshments. With a donation from each ticket sold going to the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. The evening will be introduced by Dee106.3’s Sunday Show presenter Simon Davies.
One of the event organisers, Peter Davies who worked at The ABC, Classic and Odeon Cinemas in Chester over a 52 year period said
“Following on from last year’s sell-out event, we are aiming to once again re-create what many regard as the golden age of cinema complete with many of the features that made “going to the flicks” special. We will be screening a brand new presentation featuring film footage and photographs of cinemas from the Picturedrome to the Odeon that are unique and tell the story of the great picture palaces in Chester. And some of the iconic films that were shown in our local Cinemas over years. During the interval, we will be bringing back the trimmings of footlights, curtains, usherettes and ice cream trays. Then we are screening the classic film “Young Frankenstein”. It’s going to be a very special evening, full of nostalgia. Many of our helpers on the day are former staff members from the old Chester picture houses and I’m sure the event will bring back many happy memories.”
