Storyhouse

Storyhouse is a library, theatre, cinema, restaurant, bar, community centre, and art hub

Officially opened by Her Royal Majesty the Queen and Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex, and with one million customers in its first year and is one of the country’s most successful cultural buildings.

The building boasts a new library that spreads right through the building, where members of the local community can work alongside the staff. It also has the longest opening hours of any library in the UK (until 11 pm every day).

The company behind Storyhouse also runs a highly-successful theatre company, which has gained national attention, and with over 2,000 activities planned each year for local marginalised groups, including autism-friendly sessions, sewing groups for refugees and regular classes for isolated and older communities, you’re well and truly spoilt for choice whenever you visit Storyhouse.

Storyhouse spaces

The 100-seat boutique cinema is designed to honour the original cinema in Chester which opened in 1936. With soft red velvet sunken seating, it’s a great space to watch the latest Hollywood blockbuster or something a bit more arty.

On top of the building sits The Garret Theatre and Bar, with its 150-seat ‘black-box’ and fully-equipped performance, rehearsal or workshop space.

The larger theatre is an 800-seat ‘proscenium arch’ stage. With state-of-the-art facilities, its auditorium spans across all three tiers of the stalls, circle and gallery.
